WEEK ONE

Welcome to our Blog! We are the third group (G3) from the OJT students from University of Saint Louis Tuguegarao.

This blog serves as a documentation on what we will be doing during our OJT here at BitStop Dagupan. This is our first post...a late post. =p

April 1, 2006 After the brief orientation with the owner of Bitstop Mr. Wilson Chua, we listened to an audiobook about e-commerce. It talks about making relationships between businesses and consumers rather than purely making transactions.

April 3, 2006 We continued with the remaining content of the audiobook that we did'nt finish. After that, we were provided with computers that we will use for the duration of our OJT. They made us set up these computers and install the required softwares by ourselves. In the afternoon, we made UTP cables for the network which we will use for our computers. Mr. Wilson also partially demonstrated to us the Network Load Balancing feature of Windows Server 2003 before going home.

April 4, 2006 We installed the required operating systems for our network. Our network is consist of three workstations that will run Windows XP and two servers that will run Windows Server 2003. We were not so lucky in setting up the Network Load Balance on our two servers though.

April 5, 2006 The network we set up was not that good so we fixed the glitches we made yesterday. In the afternoon, we have not been able to do anything than browsing the net because Mr. Wilson had a meeting and not able to give us instructions on what to do.

April 6, 2006 In the morning we did some installation. We installed SQL 2005 in the Windows Server 2003 environment.
We were also able to solve the problem that we encountered in setting up the Network Load Balance. We found out that the computer that we were using had a hardware issue, probably not the LAN card because we once tried to replace it and the result is the same.We tried to use another computer and it worked instantly. We were all relieved because setting up Network Load Balance had been holding us down for the past days.

April 7, 2006 Re-installation of Windows XP, .Net and SQL. The installations took a lot of hours (nearly the whole of the day) so we were all surfing the net that day while waiting.

me..Marcelo and Mike

were tasked to install an IDS (Intrusion Detection System) by sir Wilson. Sir Wilson also asked us to make screenshots as we set up the system. We used SNORT, an open source network intrusion detection system.

According to what we have discovered by following its manual, it makes the computer on which it is installed stealth. It can perform port scans, detect CGI attacks, buffer overflows and other network attacks. The software has tons of settings and configurations that we do not understand aside from the terms we learned from our C.S.I. subject.
On our first try to run the program, we encountered different errors. We tried to debug them and somehow we managed to solve them. After that, we configured the software step by step by following the manual and made made screenshots as a documentation.

Although we did'nt set up the software in its entirety, we did managed to learn something from the experience. After our OJT, we will try to go back and learn this software or even other IDS softwares by ourselves. Because network security is vital on data security and securing is kinda fun...
